We've all done it. You click a link, stare at a white screen for 3 seconds, and then hit the "Back" button. In the digital world, patience is non-existent.

If your website is slow, you are losing money. Amazon found that every 100ms of latency cost them 1% in sales. For a UK small business, a slow site means higher bounce rates and lower Google rankings.
The Speed Checklist
1. Image Optimisation
Are you uploading 5MB raw photos from your camera directly to your website? This is the #1 cause of slow sites. Images should be compressed and served in modern formats like WebP.
2. Server Location
If your customers are in Milton Keynes, why is your website hosted in Texas? The physical distance data has to travel matters. Ensure your hosting is UK-based or uses a global Content Delivery Network (CDN).
3. Caching
Every time a user visits your page, the server shouldn't have to rebuild it from scratch. Caching stores a "ready-made" version of your page to serve instantly.
4. Code Bloat
Are you loading 15 different analytics scripts, a chat widget, a heatmap tool, and a social feed? Third-party scripts are heavy. Audit what you actually need.
5. Mobile Performance
Your site might be fast on your office fibre, but how does it load on 4G in a bad signal area? Google measures your site based on its mobile performance, not desktop.
How to test?
Don't guess. Use data.
- Google PageSpeed Insights: The gold standard. Aim for a score of 90+.
- GTmetrix: Gives detailed waterfall charts to see exactly what file is slowing you down.
- IT Boffins Free Tools: We offer a quick site audit tool to give you a snapshot of your performance.
