ITBoffins Image Scout is built for small WordPress sites that need faster images without a cloud account, monthly quota or server shell access.

No external image API
WebP
Modern copies where supported
Uploads
Find hidden builder images
What it does
Uploads-folder scout
Walks the uploads folder in batches to find JPEG and PNG files used by builders, themes and imports outside the Media Library.
Local processing
Uses PHP image tools on your own server. There is no third-party image service, API key, account or monthly quota.
Safer WebP delivery
Creates WebP siblings and serves them through standard WordPress content and image filters, with original fallbacks for browsers that need them.
Plain-English settings
Shows what your host supports, explains the benefit of each option and keeps irreversible choices clear before you run bulk actions.
Best for
Where this plugin helps
- Small-business WordPress sites with slow pages caused by large image uploads.
- Page-builder sites where images are scattered through templates, CSS and uploads folders.
- Shared hosting where command-line tools such as cwebp or jpegoptim are unavailable.

Headline terms and responsible use
Back up before using ITBoffins Image Scout
These plugins are free WordPress tools provided under the GPL licence, without any warranty. To the maximum extent permitted by law, IT Boffins is not liable for data loss, downtime, missed enquiries, incorrect public information, loss of profit or other commercial loss arising from installation, configuration or use.
- Back up your WordPress database and wp-content/uploads folder before running bulk optimisation or whole-folder scans.
- Test on a staging copy first if the website takes payments, receives enquiries or uses a complex page builder.
- Keep original-image backups enabled if you need a quick restore path, and check a sample of important pages after optimisation.
- Image processing depends on your hosting environment. IT Boffins cannot guarantee every server will support every image format.
This summary is not a replacement for the full licence or our general website terms. If the site is business-critical, take a verified backup and test in a staging environment first.
Common questions
Does Image Scout send my images anywhere?
No. Compression and WebP creation happen on your own WordPress server using available PHP image libraries. There is no external image API or tracking service.
Why does it scan the uploads folder?
Many WordPress builders, imports and themes place images on disk without keeping a clean Media Library attachment record. The uploads-folder scout helps find those hidden files so they can have WebP copies too.
Can it damage my original images?
The plugin validates processed files before replacing originals, but bulk image changes still deserve a backup. Keep a site backup before use and check important pages after running optimisation.
Does it replace a full speed audit?
No. Images are one common speed issue, but hosting, caching, scripts, fonts, page builders and themes can all affect performance. Image Scout tackles the image part.
